Cover Letter
- Cover letters are key to selling yourself to the company. It is a personal letter to the company as to how your skills and abilities fit within the job description.
- Much like the resume, although you want to expand on your skills and experiences, being concise is key. Never exceed more than 1 page for cover letters.
- Do your research; cover letters are not just to talk more about yourself, but also what you know about the company! Look on the company website and pick any values or goals that you feel align with your own, and mention it in the first paragraph before talking about why you’d be a good fit
- Good personal connections to make with the company can include the following:
- Did you meet representatives of the company at a career fair etc.?
- Are you using their products?
- Have they recently published an article that you are interested in?
- Do you have an emotional attachment to their story/ mission/ core values?
- Don’t make it too wordy; cover letters should be eloquent yet concise, don’t write more than a page. By making your cover letter lengthy, you are risking boring the employer, and perhaps risking your chances of landing a position.
- Tip: expanding on your professional summary in the beginning of your resume results in your cover letter!
- Just like your resume, it’s important that you let others read and review your cover letter. This way, you can eliminate any mistakes, as well as get some good tips on how you can improve from an outside perspective. You can also book cover letter reviews online.

Extra Tips:
- Use an electronic signature. If you can scan your signature and insert into your cover letter makes it look more professional.
- Upload your cover letter and resume as ONE document. Employers get MANY applicants and to search for two document instead of one makes things easier for the employer and more of a desirable candidate.
- Covert your cover letter and resume into a .pdf document or something that cannot be edited. It protects you and your documents.
